Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

A Want, CO2 Emissions, and Addiction

I think that getting the latest technology is definitely a want. Older phones have all the necessary functions that a phone needs such as messaging, pictures, calling, and emailing. We do not need all the extra special features such as using a finger print to log in. People only get the newest phone because of looks. Phone companies keep adding new features just so they can have more buyers and earn more money; the features are not necessary. Although I'm aware of this, I am guilty of wanting the latest phones because my friends are getting them and they look better. I will get a new phone every 2-3 years. Cell phones have a great impact on our carbon emissions. As stated by Ethicalconsumer.org, to manufacture a phone it causes 16 kg of CO2. It rises to about 22kg after two years of the phone consuming power. It then increases even more to 94kg to transmit calls across the network. I also think that cell phone addiction is a real problem in today's world. PsychGuides.com states that 60% of U.S. college students consider themselves with a cellphone addiction, 71% of peopl e sleep next to their phone, etc. This addiction can interfere with daily activities, work, and relationships. There are multiple ways to stop your cell phone addiction. When you wake up in the morning don’t directly go on your phone. Turn your phone off and put it in a different area while driving, sleeping, doing homework, or sleeping. Having the latest cell phone not only is a want, but it increases our carbon emissions and interferes with our daily lives.
