Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Wants or needs
I believe that people don't need new technology it is a want. You don't need the latest phone but they get it because their want for it. People treat technology and fashion more importantly than some serious subjects not realizing the environmental effects they have. To make an iPhone it requires a lot of raw earth materials such as water, wood, and sand. According to http://venturebeat.com/2013/07/31/iphon … g-graphic/ over 70,000,000 million iPhones were sold in 2011! Due to many technology being produced overseas it takes up a lot of energy to send it over to different countries, therefore sending more harmful gases into our atmosphere.
I agree that people do not need the newest technology, it is a want. It is surprising there have been over 70,000,000 million new iphones sold in just one year. People may think they need the newest cell phone, but they need to consider the environmental effects.
Is all technology a want?? Also, is just new technology a want? Technology does not have to be a mechanical device; it can be a a simple tool for building a house or a process to help farm and pick crops. It is true technology can be a double-edged sword like how you said over 70 million iPhones were sold in 2011, but not all technology is bad. Technology is sometimes essential to live and function in this world.
I believe that many of the negative impacts that our environment suffers is derived from peoples wants instead of their needs. If people were able to realize how much damage they are creating to the environment by doing simple things as spending 10 extra minutes everyday in the shower, or not turning the lights when they should be, we could create such a big change. I believe that in order for the cleansing and restoring of our environment, people need to set aside their needs from their wants, and start using the resources only for what they truly need in their lives.
I agree but also disagree, because now a days children need the lastest technology due to most homework assignments that teachers give us. Most everything is done on computers or some sort of technology now a days. Not only is technology a want most of the time but also is a need for some children looking to turn in tomorrows homework assignment.
I also believe that technology, for the most part, is a want. I think that it is easy for people to forget the environmental damage of producing and throwing away devices like phones, computers, and even keyboards, because those things are not made in America, but rather in other countries, especially in China. Therefore, the toxic effects of producing and consuming new technology are not fully realized with many, which is a dangerous thing because consumers do not truly understand the gravity of their purchases. I too sometimes forget that new technology comes with environmental costs, such as toxic landfills and carbon producing factories, so it is tempting to buy whatever is the newest device. Yet, I recognize that there is never really a need to constantly replace my functional devices with new ones, so I am able to avoid buying new technology often. However, sometimes technology is a need. For example, hospitals need certain instruments such as an MRI machine or a dialysis machine because these pieces of technology can save or improve someone's life.
Nowadays, people have become so dependent on technology that it has become a imperative need. By technology I mean every technique, complex or simple, that humankind has acquired over the course of evolution. Without technology, there's no way our planet can support 1.3 billion humans who are all likely to be hunters and gatherers. Technology is not about the new iPhone that you use or other technology product. It is about supporting humankind more efficiently. Everything manufactured around you wouldn't exist if there's no technology. Imagine one day you wake up with no manufactured goods around you, no lights and no water from the tap without technology of laying out water pipes and power grid. Then you will understand what I am saying. Technology is imperative.
I agree with you
I think people want to have the latest model of mobile phone to be cool.
I also think that the new technologies have replaced the communication mostly in boys and girls who are 13-18 years old. Parents should buy new technologies only if their children need them.
I think that people must choose a simple mobile phone. I don't agree that some people change their phone whenever it comes out a new one. We should also take into account environmental effects.
