Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or needs: do I want it or do I need it?

elabxlcic

The society nowadays is extremly consumerist. People have too many things, mostly things which they do not need or use. We have learned that after a few years or even less, the things we bought aren't usable anymore. But is that true?
I don't think so. I think that the media has taught us to believe we need things which we wouldn't even think of using if it wasn't for the TV or other types of advertising which tricks us into buying stupid stuff.
Before making these decisions to spend our money on things we don't need, we should ask ourselves: what will I use it for? Will I use it often? Where does it come from? How was it made? Does it cause damage to the enviroment? DO I REALLY NEED IT?
Most of the time, our wishes aren't compatible with our needs. Most of the time, we get things because we think they're "cool" and "modern" and because they make us "popular" or "better than others". Is this where we want our values to lay?
I think it's pretty sad how the socie ty works nowadays and how everything is built on HAVING, not GIVING BACK to people, enviroment, anything.
What's your opinion?

Hi Ela! That was very deep,it is nice to see young people with such mature thoughts. On behalf of your post,I completely agree with all the arguments you have stated. We don't actually need these consumeristic items, but we still buy them because they are considered cool and modern. For most people it is hard to resist the pressure of society, and we still buy these things. A small step for change,in my opinion, would be to extend the time period of f.e. mobile phone usage..So instead of buying a new phone every year,we should use one until it stops working. That is my opinion on the subject,I hope you find it interesting.

I think that the main advertising goal in to convince custumers that they have a problem. They convince you that the producers have a product which will solve your problem. All you have to do is just buy their product and problem solved!
This is the time of consumery society.

Hello Ela, I agree with you completely that keeping up with trends is a very big problem nowadays. I admit that even I sometimes buy things that I most certainly don't need, but I just think that it looks pretty or cool. Also the marketing is tricking people by saying that everything is organic or good for the environment, but in reality it isn't. Maybe smaller items aren't such a big problem, but when buying bigger items (cars, kitchen appliances ...)  we should think about how much they pollute and stuff like that. So, to sum up, we should definitely think more about our needs than wants. But, once in a while, we can treat ourselves with buying something that we don't necessarily need, but makes us feel good smile
