Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Is technology a want or a need?
For me, technology is partially a want and a need. I don’t need to have the newest technology – I was perfectly fine with the same phone for three years, until it stopped updating the OS properly. However, I do need tech for school, and I think my classmates and any other people who use computers for the majority of their schoolwork would agree that when the technology we use for school gets worn out, replacing it with a functional, up-to-date version is definitely a need.
When buying electronics (or, to be honest, anything), I don’t usually stop to consider the environmental impacts. I think this is something I should be aware of, especially if the things I’m using are harmful to the environment. I think it’s also important to consider how much we use electronics, and how that affects the environment. I know that most people at my school use their laptops for at least about six hours, or the length of the school day. I usually spend even more time using tech for schoolwork – some days, I probably spend ten hours or more on my laptop and phone.
It’s important to be awa re of the impact energy use has on the environment, and I recognize that I use MUCH more than I need to. Between using and charging our laptop and phones, in addition to the other electronics in the house, my family is guilty of wasting energy, and I can safely assume that my energy usage is a significant portion of that. Despite this, I want to make an effort to use my electronics less, and hopefully even make a change in my carbon footprint.
I think technology is a want because people have been surviving and thriving without the use of technology for many years. Even though society today heavily relies on the use of technology, I think that even if we stopped using our technology we'd still be able to communicate with people and progress as a society. Although technology allows us to communicate with people from around the world and improves our daily lives, I do not think it is need.
