Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

For me, technology is a need. Not a very important need (eg food, water, shelter) but I still need to call/text my parents in emergency. Although many things I do in my spare time relate to recreational technology (eg watching the Pokemon anime, playing Pokemon Go, and playing Pokemon duel) I would classify it under need.
