Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Is technology a want or need?

Although our new technology is needed for advances in medicine and communication, it's not needed for simple entertainment. In my opinion we don't necessarily need technology for games such as octagon when we could be doing something more productive, but now a days we definitely want it and some people even believe that they can't live without snapchat and instagram. Though some technology is a definite need for our society, others are just a need and can have a harmful impact on the environment.

I fully agree with what you're saying here, but maybe offering alternatives could be helpful. Things such as board games and hopscotch just aren't entertaining to most anymore. I can't even remember the last time someone told me "I can't wait to go home and draw" or "I'm excited for my walk today". What im suggesting is maybe just restricting that time on the devices so kids aren't excessively bored. But otherwise, great idea.

I see your point, kids should be given a few hours a day of screen time to fulfill the need of technology. Since the time would be reduced, kids would also learn to play outside and focus on hanging out with friends rather than just texting them. Great idea.

Hi Elizabeth! Phones use up precious resources and its not really a need in the world. Even though I'm one of the people that use their phone constantly, I am beginning to truly understand the effects technology has on the planet. About 3.5 billion people in the world use their phones for around 10 hours a day. We use technology that is harming the environment rather than going outside or talking to people. Restrictions on technology is a great idea.

Unfortunately,  we have reached a point in history in which if we turned away from technology, our societies would slowly fall apart. However, this does not mean we can make technology less destructive. Most rare earth minerals found in smartphones are mined using cheap labor. Apple products are created in China in horrible workhouses. The best way to stop this is to pass laws encouraging worker safety. As a society we don't need to turn away from technology, but improve the way technology is built and use it responsibly.
