My results from the calculator said that my total footprint was 3791 kilograms. The average for my region is 6879 kilograms. It is made up of 1805 kg for transportation compared to my region which was 1759 kg, this is probably because I live in the country and we travel 60km every time we go into town for sports etc. My home results were 1028kg and the regions is 1806kg, we rarely use electric heating or cooling and we use cold water washes for our clothes and always hang them on the line to dry. We don't have very much rubbish and we recycle as much as possible. My food results were 2331kg and the regions is 2726kg. We eat vegies out of our own garden through most of the summer and autumn. We have our own chickens which is where most of our food waste goes, and they provide us with eggs. My purchases results were 152kg and the regions was 588kg, we have hand me downs from relatives which is where most of my clothing comes from. We use our own shopping bags and av oid using plastic bags as much as possible. We always use our own water and recycle at home and as much as I can at school.

I understand having to commute a long distance to school. That was one of the reasons my transportation was higher, like yours. Also, like your household, we rarely use a lot of heat in our home. I believe you are doing everything possible for the environment.

I think it's really good that your family seems to really do things to make that carbon number go down. It's very good to grown your own food, keep yourself from overly spending, and to recycle. Keep up the good work!

Wow, that is crazy how you were able to stay so far below your regions average. It seems that the transportation footprint was one of the biggest footprints for most everybody. It seems like you are trying to help keep your own footprint down and help the environment.

It's good that you and your family grow your own food and try to recycle as much as possible. It amazes me how much of a difference there is in our total carbon footprint (mine was 27,787 kgs)! This motivates me to do more to reduce mine even more!

I found this very impressive do to the amount of carbon footprint you used and the amount your region total was. You were able to stay way under your regions average. Thats very good that you use barely any electricity and find other ways to conserve energy to make things work. I also found it very awesome that you grow your food and save so much money on not buying a ton of food at stores. This just motivated me to change the way I live and to reduce my carbon footprint a ton.

I think it is awesome that you have a carbon footprint that is so much lower than the average in your region! Using cold water to wash clothes, hanging them up to dry, recycling, and eating from your own garden are all great things to do to keep your carbon footprint low. You seem to be very environmentally friendly!

My name is Deborah and I think its great that you eat veggies from your own garden, also I think its good that you have your oxen chickens which provides you with eggs. I also try to recycle at home as much as possible.

Interesting,you live a healthy and conservative life style.I also have a carbon foot print that is lower then my region but not as low as yours, my total carbon footprint is 8,780 kgs and my region has a average total of 15,918 kgs.

I definitely need to work on my carbon footprint; my overall average is 15,154 kg.  Your family is doing great things to reduce carbon emissions, including letting laundry air dry and eating vegetables out of your own garden.  I need to work on using less energy in my house, and might suggest to my parents to have our clothes air dry.  I would love to have a vegetable garden also, but I don't really have a green thumb so I don't think that would work out.  I can't think of any advice to give you about your footprint; you seem to be all set!  Great job!

Hey Hillary this is Caleb from the US. I think your carbon footprint is very impressive due to your low levels. I have chickens of my own also where we get our eggs from. I should probably look into washing my clothes as efficiently as you do. We rarely ever hang anything up, we usually just toss everything into the dryer. I also need to try and recycle more at home like you do yourself. Overall your carbon footprint is great and everyone should try to be as efficient as you have been.

I read this and was amazed at all the things that you do to reduce your carbon footprint. I think it is really awesome that you are able to have a garden and chickens for food. It is also awesome that you are able to hang your clothes out on a line and are able to cool/heat your house naturally. I do not really see anything that you could improve on. Your family is doing a great job!

Your carbon footprint is very impressive! If you are wanting to lower your transportation amount, try to lower the amount of trips that you take into town since you live so far away.

Sometime the best thing we can do for our carbon footprints is to talk to our local government representatives to try to convince them to improve access to sustainable options, such as efficient and frequent public transit.

Hi Hilary! I think its great that you recycle as mush as possible, I come from a family of 7 so recycling is a big deal. I also had the thought that when you go to your sports games/ practices is it possible you are able to carpool with a friend that was you are cutting down on your carbon footprint. I only say that because when I go to my volleyball games/practices I ask anyone on my team if they want to ride with me to where we will practice or have a game.

This is very interesting! Here in America we tend not to recycle and make use of our resources as well as you are! I think it is great that you have water heaters and eat out of your garden, and use your chickens for eggs. Perhaps there are more ways to be even more less carbon efficient. You could find ways to not buy as much during the winter, or take public transportation getting into and out of town.

Your regions average carbon footprint is much less then the average in North Carolina, which is 15,918 kgs! You definitely reduced your personal carbon footprint by growing your own vegetables throughout Summer and Fall and by wearing hand-me-downs from other relatives. I will use your methods to reduce my personal carbon footprint.
