Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology, is it a want? Or is it a need?
I believe that technology is both a want and a need. Almost all teenagers have a phone. Having a phone is helpful when you need to communicate with people, but some teenagers also want access to the internet, for say instagram and or snapchat. If you are in a bad situation, you would need some form of communication to use. In addition, the more we use and become addicted to technology, the more it increases our carbon footprint. In conclusion, technology is more of a want than an overall need.
I agree that technology is both a want and a need, especially in our society today. Although we use technology just for fun, such as posting pictures on instagram or playing a game on a phone or computer, technology is also a need in order to keep in touch with friends, to communicate with parents when we are not at home so they know we are safe, and to do almost all schoolwork. According to a survey done by Pew Internet Project, 78%, which is around 16 million students, use the internet at school. Another survey done by Ed Tech Magazine revealed that 74% of educators say that technology is essential to allowing them to widen their classroom content. Also, from personal experience I know my mom finds it helpful for me to have a phone, as that way she can contact me easily when I'm not home. However, most people do not use technology only when they absolutely need it, but instead use it for fun and get addicted to it. Because of this, I do agree that technology for many people is more of a want than a need.
I also agree that technology is a want and a need during the 21st century. Technology can be a want for most teenagers, as they use it for social media in order to communicate to their friends. But it's also a need for school, as it can be used to access newer information for projects, and it helps reduce the usage of paper. Because of the use of paper, over 30 million acres of forest are destroyed annually. This affects multiple ecosystems, as the animals lack a home and natural cycles are disturbed. Paper is also damaging to the environment as when paper rots it emits methane, a greenhouse gas. Also, when it is burned or composted, it emits carbon dioxide. And the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year, according to Edutopia. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. There are multiple pros and cons to using technology, but when it comes to school it's definitely a need. It n ot only helps the environment, but it provides students many opportunities to learn.

I also agree that technology is both a want and a need in today’s society and I agree with everybody's ideas. Many teens use technology for social media which is a want, not a need. For example, Pew states, “Teens are diversifying their social network site use. A majority of teens — 71% — report using more than one social network site out of the seven platform options they were asked about.” This shows how many teens use their access to technology for social media. However, at the same time technology is a need. People use their phones as a form of communicating and searching things up. For example, from my own experience in high school, we use our computers in all of our classes and I need my computer to look things up and turn assignments in. Technology is a crucial part of many students education. For example, the U.S Board of Education states that technology is, “Used to support both teaching and learning, technology-infused classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and handheld devices; expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials; s upports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds 21st century skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning.” This highlights how technology is a need in 21st-century schooling. In my own experience, I know many instances where my family members talk about how they didn’t have access to technology like I do and how I am on my phone too much but in reality, I am doing schoolwork. This shows how far our society has come with our technology advances. In conclusion, I do agree that for many people technology has unfortunately become more of a want than a need.

In my opinion, technology can be a want when used in a purely self-entertaining way, but is overall a need. Throughout history, the human race has prided itself on the technological advancement of our civilization. Specific types of technology enable us to study the universe and create things that our ancestors could only dream about. Things like radios, phones, and computers revolutionized business and enabled us to progress towards a more effective future. However, technology can also be seen as a "want," since cell phones and other entertainment devices can be quite detrimental to our society. In addition, there is no denying the benefits technology plays in education. Not only are there improvements in problem solving skills, job-related skills, motivation, and reading comprehension but technology makes learning fun and easier says Melissa Johnston in her article “Students Speak Out on Benefits of Technology.” When technology is utilized in learning and teach ing the younger generation, the benefits of technology in the classroom are shown.

I totally agree in thinking that technology is both a want and a need. The original innovation of laptops and phones in general was to increase communication between people and make contacting people who are far away easier. However, with every new app invented, people are given more and more reason to spend time on their phones. Not because they need to call or text their parents, or because they need to email a teacher but because they want to. According to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/03/health/te … se-report/) teens spend 9 hours a day on social media like Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. If we can cut down on the technology we use when we want to, but lean towards only using technology when we need to, we can dramatically decrease our carbon footprint because technology makes up a large contribution to it.
I agree with the fact that technology can be both a want and a need. At first, most people might think that technology is obviously, a want. It doesn't actually help your physical or mental health and in fact, it probably makes them worse. But, almost everyone nowadays has a phone or computer that they use daily. According to Pew Research Center (http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/04/09/t … logy-2015/), 92% of teens report going online daily — including 24% who say they go online “almost constantly.” We live in a society where technology is becoming more and more of a necessity in one's daily life. Just about every socially related thing becomes easier with technology. It makes you more connected and aware with everything that goes on. So, in today's world, I think technology makes life easier and easily could be seen as a need, but in the end, it's really just a want for the reasons that I previously stated.
I agree that technology can be a want and a need. A example is using a phone. Even though phones can be used for personal uses, it can also be used as a need because you can use a phone to make important calls, pay bills, send emails, and many other things.
I agree that technology, for the most part, is a want. In today's society, however, it is very hard to be successful without the help of technology. For example, getting directions to a place is very simple if you have a phone, but if you don't, you might have more trouble finding a map than someone would have had a decade ago. Technology is definitely extremely useful and makes many people's lives much easier, but there are people that survive without it. Therefore, I think technology is a want and not a need.
I agree that technology is both a want and a need. For emergencies, such as a fire or a shooting, technology such as a mobile phone is a need in today’s society. But, on the other hand, in almost all other situations, technology is a want. According to http://www.dailymail.co.uk, one billion people in the world do not have a mobile phone and one third of the world do not have access to the internet. Although some of those people are less fortunate than the people in the world with mobile phones/ access to the internet, they are still surviving without technology. Due to this, I think that technology is both a want and a need, but mostly a want and not a need.

I partly agree, technology has become a need, although it was not always that way. The simple answer to how to make technology less of a want is to learn self control and personal discretion of when to use or not use it. Although it is completely necessary for success in some schools and work environments, technology misuse is a huge temptation. For instance, when you have unlimited knowledge at your fingertips, someone may suddenly want to know what films John Travolta acted in and search it up in the middle of class. That’s an abuse of technology. If technology is used responsibly, it eliminates the whole want part of technology.
I agree that technology has become both a want and a need. Although technology is a very complex and a helpful tool, we humans take advantage of it. We are now glued to our phones instead of enjoying the outside world. We have so much knowledge on a tiny screen. Why not use it to make the world a better place, instead of using it for things that aren't useful.
