Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Is Technology a Want and/or Need

elijahscott

I usually get a new piece of technology every two years. I rarely consider the impact of technology when it comes to the environment but I do consider the impacts of technology socially. Once people start getting new technology and getting used to technology, they slowly start to get addicted and sooner or later it gets harder and harder to steer away from the addiction. If people are used to using technology for almost everything, it does get hard when people don't have technology with them all the time. Also, because new technology gets released every 3-6 months, people will always want everything that is new. Because of all of this, technology is most definitely a want and need

Hey Elijah, I think that with the pace where more and more new technologies are being developed rapidly in today's society, it's becoming a need. However, I don't think it's such a bad thing. Many of these new technologies are made to make lives easier for humans, and to help out the environment. For example, new sustainable farms are being innovated where the crops are stacked on each other instead of using vast fields to produce these crops. There are many aspects of technology that become addicting, but as they effect more and more of people's lives, it ultimately becomes a need, and a part of that person's life.

Technology could be considered both of the options. Humans these days use technology for everything as you stated above. However, there are pros and cons. A con as you stated above is that many humans are now addicted to their personal devices. This causes health problems like over stimulation or sleep deprivation. Social media is a big problem for some people. Technology has done lots of good for society as well. It removes the need for paper. If humans were to do all their work on computers we would have very little need for trees. Thus, decreasing the deforestation around the planet. This would mean that more carbon dioxide could be absorbed instead of it being pumped into the atmosphere in vast quantities. Technology allows us to find answers to things online as well entertain ourselves. It allows us to flawlessly perform personal and work related tasks. In conclusion, I believe that technology has far more pros to it than cons.

I agree with your statement because it has definitely become clear to me in the past couple of years that technology is a very prominent as well as addicting force in my life. Not until recently, did I realize the impact that technology has on the environment and how much work is put into developing it just so that every few months/years it can be thrown away and replaced. I especially agree with your statement that because technology is everywhere it can be hard to avoid and becomes a necessity, but I hope that in the future technology can be used for more good and can improve the environment and world rather than destroying it.

I agree with this because as society advances, technology is used in more environments such as work and school. New apps are constantly being developed and technology upgrades are making life faster and easier. As a result, everyone keeps buying the latest and most improved laptops, phones, and other modern technology. Even though technology has become a necessity, we should try to limit ourselves to how much we use and be aware of its consequences to the environment, no matter how tempting it is.

Technology can be both options. People who already get new technology every so often will always want to get the newest piece of technology they can get. Some people can need it for work and school. Although people use it for school and work, some people only want the newest technology for their own amusement. Having the newest technology can make the person seem like they are more. Technology being a huge part of our everyday lives should be limited, as we should be aware of the environment. Manufacturing technology can be harmful to our environment and we should not always need the newest technology.

I agree that technology can be a want and a need. It is a need for reasons of communication and we have learned a lot more about the world with technology like in this case all of us would not be able to communicate without it. What I think is important is instead of buying newer and better products for your selfs we should be focusing on improving impoverished areas with technology so many countries can make the advancement that the United States are making. I think too much technology can ruin our mindset as humans. But if use cautiously and under some restriction, tech can be used to learn more things about the environment around us just like the website we are all on now.

I agree that Technology is a need only because Humans continue to want better and greater things for themselves and for the world.  Humans saw technology as a way of gaining bigger and better things therefore making it a need.  As a result of it being a need, people also want it just for the sake of having it or for social purposes like stature.

I totally agree with your opinion. Early in society, technology in my opinion was a want, but now since it is advancing at such a rapid pace, I believe it is becoming a need and people rely on it. Those who get new technology constantly will become addicted and want more, but I think we have to limit our usage with technology because it does harm the environment but if we watch out for that, it will help.

I feel that modern day society has two groups. One group needs technology, and the other wants it. The people that live in countries that were industrialized early have their citizens addicted, and needing technology. While in countries that are still industrializing, some citizens do not have access to some technologies that the other group has. By not having that privilege, they want it. The reason why the first group needs technology is because of addiction, and because they had it for almost all of their lives. There have been tests that show that children are more prone to addiction. I found this article that talk about it in more detail.

I agree that the people who have started using devices from childhood have these technological devices as a need. In developing countries, the people there did not get these devices until adulthood. For them, technology is a want. I feel for most other technologies is a want because they it is possible to live without them. The only  other need is the refrigerator. We do not know how to preserve food otherwise. Otherwise, I feel everyone is able to use technology without the urge to use them.
