Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Technology. Want or Need?
I think that technology is a want and not a need because people have the ability to survive without it. For example, many people living in poor countries don't have access to cell phones and computers. It is definitely beneficial to have technology in todays society because many issues are handled online. Without the internet, it would be difficult to do lots of things that we take for granted in our lives so it is important to think of the people that don't have access and how they still manage to survive without it. Therefore, technology is a want and not a need.
I think we still need technology to help humans communicate across the world, better than sailing on ships, air travel, vehicle transportation, or using human messengers since they can get expensive. But the way the technology uses its power source is the problem. Many depend on electricity to power, so why not switch to solar panels? There are solar-powered chargers for laptops and cellphones.
Even internet can go solar. So far, Facebook has created a solar plane, Aquila, to deliver internet to remote parts of the world. If the world begins to use solar-powered planes to deliver WiFi and depend entirely on other renewable energy sources like wind and water, it can be better than burning fossil fuels and using cables to power them.
Technology can be a want or need depending on how you view it. If it is entertainment, social media, or an addiction, it is a want. A need for technology are using a better way of communication, doing schoolwork, using it as a library (although you can go to one physically but you can have instant access on internet), etc. It is definitely a need now because current advanced urban areas and businesses all use technology.
Here’s some info on the solar plane:

Although technology is a want it is needed more now that we are in the the twenty first century. A lot of people rely on technology in order to learn, and communicate. Technology is how a lot of us find out what is going on in the world or even for jobs you need to have communication now that companies can be worldwide. Now students even use it in school to turn things in electronically which is not as needed.
I believe that technology is a right and therefore and need. Technology allows people to communicate all across the world. According to Nigel Chapman he believes technology for the developing world is about survival rather than entertainment. Also, technology helps to bridge gender gaps. He also thinks, “If we can change these gender stereotypes and transform attitudes to technology, we will see girls in the developing world attain their human right to technology, and make massive leaps in both their private and their working lives.”

Technology is still a want, but it is very close to becoming a need. The entire world has shifted to be very technology-based, and it has almost become a requirement to have technology. It has many important uses, with both jobs and school also shifting to take advantage if technology. What we need to figure out is how to make energy more efficient to help decrease the effect of technology. After this becomes reality, technology will definitely become a need.
In my opinion, technology in the current day in age is a viable need. Although in the past it was not. For, technology has made such great advancements that it has created amazing careers as well as helped people find careers. Another example of technology being a necessity is how it makes the transfer of information to be so easy. If the internet did not exist we wouldn't even know about the climate change and its effects as much as we do. Because scientists and professors are always sharing their recent research and updating the common people on what is happening in reality.
I think that most technology is not a need, it is a want. No one needs new technology. Although it helps to have it and is useful to communicate, it is definitely not a necessity. So many people in poor countries live without it and are surviving fine. Technology is becoming a need but it is not quite a need at this moment.
In the long run, I believe that technology is more of a want than a need. However, the significant advancements we have made in technology are now utilized on a daily basis. Due to this, we have relied on this advanced technology to facilitate our lives. A need means that one cannot live without. If the technology was taken away, we would, in fact, survive, however, we might find more work put into our lives. For example, in my experience, I was without a phone because it was broken, and I found that communication and dealing with daily problems was much more difficult.
