Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology is a want and a need

I believe technology is both a want and a need.

First, technology is a need. For the modern society, technology is a necessity. We need technology to communicate with our family and friends while getting their response back at once, we need technology to take a hot shower after we get back from work or school, we need technology to do and submit homework online etc..   Technology connects people from all over the world and shares their ideas ( just like what we are doing at this online forum!) Without technology, it will take a long time to have one single message sent and sometimes the message may be lost during the period of transportation. Second, technology is a want. We want to have more advanced technology to make our lives more convenient and more entertaining. For me, a lot of my daily entertainment involves technology (watching Youtube, play video games, watch movies).

On July 27th, 2016 ( about ten months after the release of iPhone 6&6S) the cumulative worldwide iPhone sales reach 1 billion! According to Pew Research center,95% U.S. adults own a cell phone  and 77% owns a smartphone. All these data show the huge population that relies on a cell phone which is only one out of hundreds of technology!

For people living in the 21st century, it is not really possible to live a normal life if you do not use technology. Because the whole society is like a train that runs on the fuel called technology. Without the fuel, the train will stop.

Overall, technology is both a necessity and a desire for modern society.

I do agree that, in this day and age, technology is a need. If we were to have all technology completely disappear, humans (first world humans to say the least) would have no idea how to grow food. Our doctors would no longer be able to preform complicated surgeries because the use of technology is taught to medical students. As an iPhone user myself, I can definitely say that it is a want but it definitely feels like a need.
