What You Want Can Hurt the Earth

There is a fine line between wants and needs. The things that are wanted can be lived without but the things that are needed can’t be. For example you may want the newest iphone but you can live without it. You need water and cannot live without it. Knowing the simple principle of wants and needs can benefit a lot of people if they choose to use it. Many people want and buy the newest iphone right when it being sold and they don’t consider the environmental impact on climate change. The estimated manufacturing footprint of 80 million iphone 6’s was estimated to be 6,460,000 tons of carbon according to https://therestartproject.org/consumpti … e-iphones/. That amount of carbon is greater than the average amount from the city of San Francisco in one year which is  5,160,000 tons. I’m not saying to boycott all apple products and phones but to consider what products you are investing in and their environmental impacts on climate change. Always be conscious about if it is a want or a need and how large of an environmental impact it has.
Although technolo gy can have a large effect on climate change, many kinds are needed. For transportation people use GPS on their phones and in their cars. To quickly hear the news, people can watch TV with the click of a button. These are just two examples but there are countless more. Technology like electronics are great things to have, but not too much of them. When more people want certain electronics the demand increases, and the manufacturing waste from these products also does. When old TV’s and computers end up in landfills, the toxic metals and flame retardants they use harm the environment. The toxic materials from landfills can kill trees which are the main supplier of oxygen. People should see that what they want and buy can have a very harsh effect on the environment. To learn more about it check out this great interactive course about the human impacts on climate change at. https://ww2.kqed.org/lowdown/2015/11/30 … resources/. You can see how dramatically the human impact on the climate has changed due to activities like burning fossil fuels and driving cars. So the next time you want the latest technology, think about how your purchase will contribute to climate change and if it’s something you really need.
