Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology, Planet Killer?

Kids nowadays want it all. From video games, to t.v, to iphones and drones is technology really a need? I don’t think so! Our earth is already being polluted as we speak but we don’t choose to really stop and take a look around us. Technology is a huge factor. We use technology on a day to day basis, from chatting with our friends, to conquering the world on the Xbox, WE CAN’T STOP! This is horrible. This tech doesn’t just charge itself you know. You leave the game system plugged into the wall and sometimes you forget to turn it off. This energy is being supplied from power plants which release horrid fumes into the air. Just think about it. Sometimes you’ll be playing the game, charging your phone, and charging the portable charger all at the same time! According to Treehugger, “There are 3.5 billion cell phones in use worldwide.” Guess how these phones stay on everyday. They get charged. Now think about this, 3.5 billion phones being charged almost everyday. Do you know what that does to the planet. Juniper Research says, “ We are predicting 13 megatons of greenhouse g as emissions by 2019.” This is horrible for our planet. Just doing a simple thing like charging our phones can cause so much damage to the earth. To our homes. We take the earth for granted and don’t care what we do to it. We pollute it and don’t think twice of it.  We need to cut this down. Electronic use should be shortened and should be used a whole lot less. By doing this we can save battery life which means you charge your phone less. Also there are video games too. They should also be used less and unplugged when not in use. Help our planet, stop texting!

You are totally on the right track with this. It's insane how much energy we use without even knowing it. I'm currently at my friends house since she has WiFi whereas I don't, and when I came in her AC was running, her Fitbit is plugged in and charging, she had some lights on, and both of the TVs in her house were running. I can only imagine how much energy she's used today and she hasn't even been home since 9 this morning. Unplugging ourselves a bit can bring down our footprints by so much and can help us conserve the energy we need to have every day.

You make a great point, while technology is extremely useful, it is not a need for most people, aside from people who are barely staying alive with technology, like people in comas for example, we don't really need these things, now, if we could make extremely efficient versions of our current pieces of technology and monitor usage to a point where our carbon emissions would be much slower than now, we could truly go somewhere with this, but for now, people are too reliant on technology in their everyday lives that putting usage down would be too much of a dream.
