Why are carbon footprints skyrocketing?
The Carbon Footprint of many Students in my schools have skyrocketed, why is that? When comparing Footprints with a classmate I noticed that hers was much higher due to transportation, upon questioning why she told me that she had been on a few flights recently. As an individual who has not been on a plane in the past year had a lower Carbon Footprint in transportations than most of my classmates. This is a problem many more privileged areas of the world deal with, those who have the ability to go a five hour drive in a one hour flight will do so for their own comfort, but how is that affecting the environment? Even just a single flight for about one hour will add about 500kgs to your Carbon footprint. a Single one hour flight!
When comparing my Carbon footprint to others I saw that some classmates were getting transportation footprints that were over 10,000kgs while I only had about 1,650kgs. The difference was huge and got me thinking the following: are people taking unnecessary flights? To explain the concept of unnecessary flights, it would include examples like the following, You live a five hour drive away from your destination and you will be staying there for a while, do you take a flight or do you drive? By taking a plane you are adding to your carbon footprint drastically for the sake of comfort, but if you were to take a drive, though it may take longer to get to your destination, your carbon footprint will not be as affected.
