Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants or Need

Although I think technology would be both a want and a need, having the latest technology is a different story. Although technology is very helpful in our daily life, there won't be much different if we bring an older version of iPhone than an iPhone 8 plus to work or to school. After all, all the new improvement on the latest version of iPhone is not going to make much change to the life of most people. For most of the time, it is a want for us to have the latest technologies. Having the latest technology will probably bring more changes to our social life than actually make us work more effectively. Especially when most of the new technologies are actually dedicated to entertainment (such as music, social media, and video games).  This unnecessary desire for people to have the latest technology is very influential to the environment. According to a report by UNEP titled, "Recycling – from E-Waste to Resources," the amount of e-waste being produced – including mo bile phones and computers – could rise by as much as 500 percent over the past decade. This could lead to a larger problem in the future.

I agree that technology is typically a need in modern life, but having the newest, most eye catching technology is an unnecessary want. For example, once I was in an airport and there was a section of dining tables near the gate we were waiting at that had 2 new ipads set up in the middle of each table for each person eating to look at. I was absolutely horrified because the ipads were separating the two people eating together, essentially putting up a divider in the middle of each table and inhibiting conversation. Similar to what you said about entertainment, these ipads mainly had pre-downloaded games or video apps on them to separately entertain the two people eating at the tables. I think the fact that most people were trying to ignore the ipads' presence just shows that having the latest technology is only a want, and not a need.
