Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
The desire for technology
I think having the newest technology is definitely a want, rather than a need. Although I know it is tempting to have the newest model as your phone, it really is not necessary. I, personally, have had the same laptop for over 2 years now and also have had the same phone. I believe that in today's society, we have become more and more addicted to our electronics, but just because times are changing, that doesn't mean our wants become our needs. I feel that unless your phone is broken or so old that it's malfunctioning, there is no need to throw it out and waste a perfectly working device. Electronics nowadays are very expensive. Not only that, but when we throw away or our electronics, we most likely don't dispose of it correctly. This could result in us damaging our own home, the Earth.
I agree with your position, Rachel. I have also had the same phone and laptop for over two years now, and they are working perfectly fine. I also agree that when it comes time to dispose of electronics, we must do it correctly. For example, you could take any old, unwanted electronics to a local recycling organization. One organization that helps with this is, Call2Recycle. This group offers locations where people can drop off electronics. Simply type in your ZIP code at Call2Recycle.org, and you will find a location near you. In addition, if your device still works, you could donate it to someone who needs it.
