New Technology: Worth the environmental impact?
From smartphones to video games, new technology is always being released and marketed. Many companies advertise products based on them being "newer" and having very small changes that are thought to improve the device. For example, many people buy new phones even if they have a functioning phone, just to have the newest technology. What they are not looking at is the environmental impact this has. MarketWatch recently wrote an article titled "Why Apple’s new iPhone is bad — for the environment", about the environmental impact of e-waste. The article illustrates how many people in society have gotten used to updating their phones every one or two years. A study from the United Nations University found that only 16% of e-waste is recycled. This study also found that in 2014, 3 million metric tons of e-waste was produced. If society is going to continue the trend of replacing functioning technology with newer technology, there must be more of an effort to recycle the e-waste and at least limit the waste created. Ideally, people will use their devices until it is no t functioning anymore, instead of buying into the corporations' "new and improved" marketing tactics. This problem has gotten out of hand lately and people need to consider the environmental impacts of their unnecessary technological purchases.
