Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Can society live with or without the latest technologies?

At this moment in time, people await the arrival of the iphone 10. They are preparing to purchase the iphone 10 even if they have a current working phone. Therefore, I question the practicality and use of having the latest technologies. For instance, the differences between the iphone 7 and 10 are not crucial to the survival of humanity. On the other hand, society relies on the developing technology to further advance medical treatment. Such technology is needed to save lives and better the care and treatment of patients. Thus, people of today are living well into their 80s in contrast to the life expectancy of 30 to 40 years in the 1800s. Furthermore, the advanced innovations of our time are directed toward an energy efficient approach. In the article, “The Carbon Capture Fallacy”, the author David Biello describes Kemper, “a widely-known coal-fired power plant in the United States”, which plans to take global action in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing reliance on coal as a source of electricity. This is important to me as my carbon footprint which repres ents my indirect and direct use of fossil fuels, has increased over the past year due to transportation. Therefore, I am concerned about my impact of these greenhouse gases/pollutants on the environment. But, with the balance of eco-friendly development that many companies are engaged in, I can rest assured that I am not a major contributor of damage to the earth’s ecosystem.  In conclusion, latest technologies are a need rather than a want.

I like how you touched on topics such as the advancement in medical purposes and longer life expectancy. While going out in public I notice that younger kids have the latest phone but I rarely see people discussing technological improvement. I think that the trending gadgets are what help boost and motivate producers to continue to create. Good job Caitlyn T.
