Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Do we use it how we should use it?
Before asking if having the latest technology is a want or a need, we should think about first if technology is a want or a need. Are we able to live in the current society without our smartphone to check our facebook feed or without a Tv or a computer, to watch movies and play games, or without a toaster or a blowdryer, to make our daily routine easier? Well no, of course, not in my case at least. So, that seems to make technology a need, maybe one of the more obvious in this current society, we would feel so rudimentary without any of it, but I don’t think that is the problem. Not being able to use a computer or a smartphone nowadays is a major drawback, I mean even my grandma knows how to send me a snapchat to stop by and eat her “sarmale” (a traditional romanian food) on holidays, but the problem is not how much we use it or how much technology entered everyone’s life, it is about how we use it, what is our purpose when we open the phone or pc, because that seems to keep us from using the most of technology. I speak here from my own experience as someone who used to waste quite some time a while ago, all alone, with a screen in my face all day long, and occasionally still does that. It is not because I wouldn’t have any friends or anything else to do, it is just like sort of a habit, and here is the point where I wanted to get. Technology is something that exists to make our life easier, something that is able to aid us reach our goals like learning on our own a whole bunch of stuff with only one, or two clicks and scrolls, or, like my grandma, making the connection between me and the people I care about, even if it is through social media or video games that I play with them when it is too cold outside to hang out. Technology is a need that helps us with our other needs and everytime we choose to buy a new device we should think:”Hey, what advantages does this one bring me and the other doesn’t?”. New products tend to be flashier and maybe some of them more power efficient (fridges for example), but if I would be to buy between my phone and the new Galaxy Note 8, I would still chose my phone because the Note 8 would be a total overkill for what my current needs are.
