Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Materialistic Things

It seems now more than ever, everybody wants what's in vogue. Anything from a Bugatti to a Ferrari, maybe the latest Iphone X, a huge house, and all the designer brands. But notice I said want, and not need. Yes, phones may be useful for communication, and we should all have a car to drive in to get from point A to point B, but why can't we settle for basic things instead of what's in vogue? Many people don't know, but a lot of daily materials we use are contributing to global warming. I feel like we should settle for things we need such as food (the right choices), maybe a hybrid car that you will use until you need a new one (not just because you want it), and basic clothing items.

I agree that it would be helpful to the environment if we all settled for the basics, but I also believe that we shouldn't be forced to live in a homologous society like "District 12" in The Hunger Games. In the real world, it's common for us to want to the latest and greatest, but it's not so common for us understand that when we buy an item and take it home with us, we're releasing thousands of chemicals. From plastic packaging alone, the ocean gets about 20 million tons of it. Incorporating more of biodegradable wrapping or using hemp instead of plastic (in terms of packaging) helps aid this word-wide problem.
