Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

want or need

Having the latest phone or device is 100% a want. It is not necessary to upgrade a perfectly fine device just because a new one has come out. We are obsessed with the image our possessions give us, in this day and age it is uncool to have anything out of date. No one realizes the consequences of the rate we consume.

I agree with you for the most part. Having up to date devices is for sure something people want rather than need. Having an android rather than an iphone is something people may look down on you for. So the desire to fit into society and be like most people is not a want, more of a need. Someone may want a new android or samsung, but are forced to get an iphone because their friends or people in their class have one. So for some people, fitting in may be more of a need, because they don't want to be bullied, or they simply want to be like everyone else. Also, what consequences are you relating too, the idea that we use our technology too much, or the fact that technology is used is negative ways? Either way, I understand that idea completely and think technology has a big impact on people's lives and we both need and want it. We need it for work, news, and many more things. We want it for social media, to communicate, etc. But I do think both of the reasons we want and need it are equally important.

I agree with what the points that you make. Following trends and "fitting in" for the most part requires getting either new clothes or possessions. A person may want the newest phone but they do not NEED it. Many people suffer and do not have access to basic necessities such as food. It is crazy to think that so many Americans are able to own more and more of what they WANT, when some people do not even have what they NEED to survive.

I agree with you because why get a newer phone when the one you currently have does the same things. I understand upgrading  if your phone is not working or not as fast as it used to be, but if it's completely fine I don't see what the upgrade is for.
