Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Want V.S. Need
With technology always changing, it's hard to keep up with it. But the real question is, do we really need all the latest technology? Every time we upgrade to the newest iPhone or the newest computer we generally throw out the old. Occasionally, we give our old devices to our younger siblings or other family members/friends but not always. In general, we throw them out. But where do these devices go? According to the New York Times, in places such as Agbogbloshie, Ghana; Delhi, India; and Guiyu, China, children pile these electronics then burn them, then look for scrap metal to sell for only a few dollars. All this burning emits CO2 into the air. But CO2 isn't the only problem in this situation. Burning these electronics can expose a person to lead, cadmium and mercury which can cause irreversible neurological effects. Not only our are old devices harming the Earth with its CO2 emissions but it is also harming young kids. All this new technology may make your lif e easier or better in one way or another but is it really worth all the CO2 being put in the air we breathe or the kids in impoverished countries lives.
I completely agree with this post. This is crazy because so many people in America upgrade their phone every year and don't see the consequences. They don't see how getting rid of there old phones impact our climate. This also raises the question, Would you want to not get the next upgrade and keep your same phone?
There is no doubt their is truth within your multi analytical paragraphs. Technology today is most defiantly a want, especially the latest trends as you had mentioned before. Both the production and disposal are harmful to the environment in their own distinct ways. While yes, some precautions and new solution may be in the process of being developed, the high rate of these technological advances, trends, and wants of civilization is considerably growing at an even faster rate. As you said, the burning of the electronics emit so much CO2 that harm the environment. The fact is, the more electronics we make, the more the "old" ones will be of no use to us, and be destroyed just as you had mentioned. Your reasoning is both truthful and accurate, something which the media sometimes fails to informs us, the population, about.
I completely agree with your post. There is a large number of people I know who get new devices almost every 4 months and then throw them away. I never knew where these devices go but now that I do know it scares me to think it could be causing harm to young children. I usually keep my old devices in a shoe box or somewhere because I don't want to throw them away and be wasted. I wonder if there is a way to recycle these devices correctly?
I agree with your following statement about the impacts of our electronics on Earth. Our technology has a major effect on global warming and rising CO2 emission. Which also has an international effect socially on both rural and urban areas. The Huffington Post has listed the consequences of CO2 emissions. Their article listed reasons climate change should be taken seriously by anyone such as "Small farmers will feel the effects, Rural and urban poor are the hardest hit, Unequal capacity for adaptation, Communities will be forced to relocate, and women, children, and the elderly will become even more vulnerable". Many people believe that none thing can be done, but that is simply not true. I urge you to think about ways you can make a difference for a better Earth and raise publicity for the social effects. For more info, this link will take you to the article I read from the Huffington Post https://www.huffingtonpost.com/rosaly-b … 39186.html.
