Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Are phones a want or need?

On some level, cell phones are a need. However, do people really need the latest model? "Manufacturing an ordinary mobile phone is estimated to cause 16 kg of CO2 equivalent emissions...Add the power it consumes over two years (average phone use length) and that figure rises to 22 kg" (http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/ethicalr … nment.aspx). Cell phones are an amazing way or communicating, saving time, or being constantly updated. But people do not need the latest model to do so. The newest models just cause use more carbon dioxide to make. People are so addicted to buying new things that it is just as simple to use an "old" model and think about your usage.

Well, I think, in  the modern society, it went from a want to need because we got them involved in so many crucial aspects of our lives that it's almost impossible to just exclude them now. Although, I do agree that we don't need a new model every two weeks.

I somewhat agree with your post. Cell phones are definitely a necessity, they do allow us to get in contact with parents picking us up, people for projects, allow us to check grades and homework and so many more helpful features. As newer phone models come out with higher levels of software older phones start to not work as well or slow down. In fact, Apple was caught not too long ago for slowing down older phone models so we could buy the newer ones (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ … erformance). Maybe it could help if we could keep our older models for as long as they can function instead of trading in the old ones for newer ones as soon as they come out we could help with CO2 emissions.
