Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Do we really need it?

In my opinion, having the latest technology is definitely a want. According to an article from The Guardian having a mobile phone and using it daily admits a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This doesn't even include how much carbon dioxide is released when the technology is manufactured. I believe if we wait until we absolutely need a new technological device we can cut down on carbon dioxide admission. Personally, I only get a new phone if mine is too broken to use. Last time I got a new phone was the summer of 2017. I didn't get the newest model but, I did get a new phone that hadn't been used. At first, I never considered the environmental impact of buying a new phone. But, now after learning how my actions affect the atmosphere, I will take into consideration my purchases next time I get new technology. I will also remember to only get the product if I absolutely need it.

I agree. Companies like Apple source the majority of their parts from halfway across the world, like in China. According to treehugger, China alone has over 300 manufacturing locations where Apple products are developed. This not only means that phones and tablets are being made with foreign materials and labor, but it then has to be shipped back to the United States for retail! On the word of Apple's Environmental Responsibility Report, their total footprint in 2017 was a whopping 29,500,000 metric tonnes of greenhouses gases. Of that 29,500,000 tonnes, 77% of that was produced from manufacturing their products. On top of that, 4% (1,180,000 metric tonnes,) were emitted from solely transporting their products back to America. If we all push for large tech companies like Apple to locally source their products, then we could eradicate millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Alexis I agree with you. Getting the latest technology is definitely a want and not a need. You don't always need the newest and most popular piece  of technology because according to The Conversation they found that " the relative contribution of ICT (information computer technology) to the total global footprint is expected to grow from one per cent in 2007 to 3.5 per cent by 2020 and reaching 14 per cent by 2040". Thats more than half the relative contribution of the entire transportation sector worldwide.

Do we really need biodiversity? It's just something we want.

The climate should take a back seat to people. People on islands can move, and we should fund them to make this feasible.
