Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Wants vs. Needs

averyj

Many things that we own we do not need, including a lot of our technology. Even if we have those things, it is not necessary to upgrade them so often. Advertisers make us think that we need to get the newest, more expensive things to be cool, and this a fundamental problem in our society.

Wanting: lust or having a desire for a un nessasary object
Needs: basic human needs

I agree, our society is all about wanting more. They tell us, you need this, you need that, and a lot of never stop and ask, "Do we really need that?". It's okay to want things, but just constantly letting go and splurging on things that we don't really need really has a bad affect on our environment.

I also agree with you guys. I believe that people want things, but not necessarily need. For example when your like at a store or something and you want lets say a new water bottle. Yeah you know that would be nice to have but, do you you need it enough to have it made in a factory.  Now, its okay to want to have new things but think about how it affects the environment.

Want: To be able to cut down my carbon food print and help everyone else to a level that doesn’t hurt the earth anymore.
Need: I have to be able to get around quickly and live in a way that is some what enjoyable to have and to do that it uses a lot of carbon.

We want things that aren’t necessary because it makes us feel better for a short period of time.

or, that we feel like we need it, but actually we don't.

colson_nguyen

I agree if it still works why upgrade it.

francesca2

I think the same. We often buy clothes or items, only because our friends or famous people have them. This is just to keep fashionable. I try not to follow much the fashions of the moment, if I need something I buy it if not no.

Very true, Avery! People depend greatly on technology  now. I know it is necessary for lots of people, and it’s really nice to have. However, I think people could cut down at least a little bit if they realized that if everyone in the US cut down their tech time by 5 minutes a day, it would make a  difference! I see kids that are only six years old that have their own devices. I personally believe that people that young should br playing with friends, going outside, or reading. Why video games?
That is just my opinion, and no offense to anyone.

JuliaWest

Hi Jillian! These are very good thoughts - I agree! There are so many other horrible environmental effects that our addiction to devices brings as well, such as widespread "ecocide" in the mining of the minerals needed, and human suffering and the use of slavery (including young children) to feed our device addictions. We are in a throwaway society.

Agreed. Everybody that owns some sort of technology, if it is a TV or phone has room to cut back on how much they use it. It doesn't help the environment, and plus, there are so much better things to do, like creating things yourselves instead of playing digital things other people create. Now, I'm not slamming any of those who play video games, as I have a PS4 and play on it on a weekly basis, but not HOURS at a time.
