Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Technology: Wants VS Needs

How long do you think you could go without technology? A day? A week? A whole year? I think people want to say they can put down their phone, however, because technology is such a big part of today’s world, how weird would it be for it not to be in your back pocket? Sometimes we can assume technology is bad, and I agree that it can be used poorly but, with technology we can predict the weather, explore the depths of the ocean and find information. I think technology will only improve from here but some things we can do to is recycle, reuse and wait. You can recycle the phone for it’s rare metals, give your phone to someone else so it can maximize its lifecycle and wait until you absolutely have to get a new phone.

For me personally, I can go about 2-3 month without a computer or phone. I feel like it wold be hard to not have the means to contact people or have the immediate gratification of an answer found on google. However, we can reduce the amount of technology we use in many ways. For starters, we can limit the amount of devices we buy, and keep them in good shape so they can last a long time. We can set limits on our devices to slowly ween ourselves off of them, and we can choose to do other activities than looking at a screen.

I agree with what you had stated about how technology can be very beneficial and how society today is almost "addicted" to their electronics. However, I believe that many societies can also be classified as one that is wasteful due to an abundant amount of people wanting to purchase the latest technology. This can then result in a large amount of hazardous waste due to people simply throwing away the old because it doesn't amount to the new.

I agree with you that we should use our electronics as long as we can. Giving your phone to someone else and recycling your phone for it's rare earth metals are both ways to make the most of your devices life cycle. I like how you included the fact that we have so many uses for our technology that it would be weird for it to not be in our pocket. We can do so much with our phone, whether good or bad that not having it would almost be impossible to do. Technology has become a part of our human progression, we are innovating using technology to progress our knowledge. Personally I couldn't go a day without technology because we do most of our assignments on a computer and we communicate through our cellular devices.
