Hello! My name is Brooke, I am 15 years old, and I come from North Carolina. My opinion is that we do not need new technology, if what we already have still works. Often times the latest model of a new cell phone or electronic device gets released and we all find ourselves considering whether we should purchase the new model. Throwing away our old electronic, that more often than not still works perfectly fine. This is usually because the new model advertises new and advanced features, or simply because everyone else is getting it and we do not want to feel left out. The environmental impact of these purchases typically does not even cross our minds. However, the reality is that the production of new electronics involves mining for finite raw materials, such as metals. With mining techniques such as mountain top removal, which literally involves blowing off the top of a mountain to reach said materials, there is a considerable amount of habitat loss and therefore a loss of biodiversity. Not to mention, often times mining releases vast amounts of pollutants into our atmos phere. Although technology plays a major role in modern society, do we really need the latest and greatest? Or can we simply me grateful for what we have and avoid further environmental consequences?
