Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
No Need for New
I do not think that people constantly need to buy new technology. A new phone with a nicer camera is cool, but when you look at it from retrospect, the effects of buying completely new tech are far worse. More packaging is added to the cycle of un-recycled items and your old tech, if not properly recycled or sold to another person, is added to the landfill too. Companies know that we constantly want new products and are willing to pay, frankly, insane amounts of money, so they feed off of the hype and even bug our old products to drag us in more (i.e. Apple: https://www.vox.com/2017/12/22/16807056 … -batteries). Breaking our intense addiction to buying the newest tech seems impossible, but we have to remember the people and places around us. You don't need validation through a screen, when showing kindness and enjoying moments with your friends can be just as satisfying.
This is very true as people buy new products that they really do not need. Lots of people only buy these for either bandwagon or the hype as you said. Making this new technology harms the Earth as it creates new toxic waste that gets released into many parts of the Earth.
I agree, this generation has become obsessed with the concept of getting the newest technology on the market and it is really taking a toll on the environment. If the companies creating this new technology came up with a way to mass produce these products with a process that doesn't harm the environment, it would greatly benefit the Earth.
I completely agree with you. Technology is advertised and designed for us to believe that we need it when in reality we really don't. When a new electronic product is released all we think about is how much we need it but we never pay any mind to how it impacts our environment. The materials and chemicals of discarded electronic waste contribute to global warming are really harm our Earth. In fact, when e-waste is warmed, toxic chemicals get released into the air which damages the atmosphere. The damage done to the atmosphere is one of the biggest environmental impacts from e-waste. When electronic waste is thrown away in landfills the toxic materials seep into groundwater, affecting both land and sea animals. When we think about how much we don't need new electronics and realize what harm it truly does, we can eventually break away from our addictions and stop killing our earth.
I definitely agree with you on the statement that people buy much unneeded technology. Many people get excited on the fact that there's a new upgraded phone or computer, and decide to buy it not knowing what comes behind this. Packaging, where old phones go, etc., while you can just keep what you have. If it still works well then there's no need for another one. This can harm the environment creating toxic waste into the Earth.
