Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Do we really need it?
We are often caught excessively spending money on material objects that we do not need: new phones, new clothes, new shoes, new makeup, new skincare... All of these things are found in stores, often there for the person who walks in and buys something new in the spur of the moment. One of the largest brands in our world is Apple, and their new iPhones and various technological products attract thousands of people. However, these products can have a detrimental effect on the environment. After we buy a new phone, where do the phones that we are done using go? According to Appleās Environmental Report from September 2017, they are producing 79 kg of CO2e with each iPhone X. Although this may not sound like a lot, statsita.com, The Statistics Portal for various different aspects of our world, 48.69 million iPhones were sold in the fourth quarter of 2018, so if that rate continues, a lot of CO2 emissions will be released into our environment. Considering this data, it is important to consider whether or not purchasing new technology is truly a want or a need, and that the en vironmental effect these products are causing can be fatal if the rate of iPhone sales continues to increase. Be mindful, technology is a want, not really a need. By reducing the amount of new technology we buy, and how often we buy it, we can truly help our changing climate.
Today's society has a tendency of looking at all goods and services we buy as needs. We have become so dependent on material goods, we feel as though we are depriving ourselves by living without it. If we as a society would take a step back and really look at what we need on a daily basis it would not only improve our quality of life but also be a positive change for our environment. If we study societies of the past we are able to sustain optimal living situations by acquiring less material goods. We as a society need to go back to those times where technology and material goods were not so prevalent at every turn. We need to take more interest in our environment, ourselves, and improve overall daily living.
I think this is very important thank you for your feed back and thoughts
