Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Do you need a new one?
In our generation and society most people buy the newest phone or computer. This is due to people bandwagoning so they can fit in or look/feel better about themselves. According to fastcompany.com, mining the rare materials inside smart phones–represents 85% to 95% of the device’s total CO2 emissions for two years (https://www.fastcompany.com/90165365/sm … e-expected). That means buying one new phone takes as much energy as recharging and operating a smartphone for an entire decade. This trend can be stopped as mostly everyone who does this has a working phone or computer. If we change our mindset, we could decrease the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
That is a great point. Also, unplugging your phone or computer when it is fully charged can limit use of electricity along with keeping your battery from getting cooked by the charger, so you wont need a new battery as often, if at all.
This is absolutely true. Additionally, older models of iPhones like the iPhone 6 are much more durable than newer models like the iPhone X.
Marcus, I totally agree with you. Rarely people ever "need" a new phone. Most people get their new phones because they want to be like everyone else with the new phones. Hannes, I also agree with your statement about unplugging your things when you are done charging. All it does it waste energy but it also overcharges your battery and will start to mess it up.
