Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Do we really need it or just want it?
In this modern era, many companies constantly update their technology or trending products to convince costumers to buy newer and more trendy items. If we can resist the urge to do this we can not only help save the earth one piece at a time but hint to companies that making products that intentionally died quickly or get buried by newer product is not ok.
Considering tech, how would we resist buying new stuff every time companies put our devices down a notch? Though most people don't need the newest phones or even a phone at all, I seriously doubt the possibility that a significant number of us would ever be able to stop buying new phones to replace our barely working last gen ones. We've just adapted so much to technology, those of all ages are using new tech now and companies have found out a way to exploit the masses. I do believe something should be done, though I don't think boycotting would be effective - plus it has some added consequences. I feel like the best way would be government policies installed to prevent companies from intentionally killing their products when they release some new version of it.
I agree with you Jason on the point that you made about that we should stop buying the next generation phones. But I also agree with jimmk about his point. I don't believe that enough people are going to stop buying new phones. Even if a few people stop doing it it will not affect our country and the world a lot. There will always be people who won't listen and just buy new phones anyways.
Conservation and reusabilty of the material side of things is incredibly important in reducing your carbon footprint, which is especially relevant considering the huge increase in fast fashion in more affluent countries, such as the U.S. for example. I think we can all agree that this sub-section of carbon emissions should not be ignored.
This is very true. A lot of people have too much stuff in their houses that they don't even need. If you ever have anything that you don't need, you can recycle or donate and help people in need. Most iPhones can be used up to 4 years without breakage and other things like that. A lot of people tend to get the new version of apple products every time they come out.
I think since we have grown so used to using technology and being excited for the newest update being released it has made us blind to the intention from the companies we buy them from. However, like previous people said, I do not think that having people refrain from buying new devices would be effective because it's such an engrained norm to have the newest phone so not that many people would actually listen.
