Education is Key

My first step in the solution for climate change is education. We need to educate more people about the costs of using too much plastic, not recycling, etc. What we are doing right now is perfect because students are the future, but from personal experience it's the older people that need to be educated on global change. But how do we educate them when they're already out of school? I have a few solutions.
First is TV and the Internet. Most people in the West watch TV and use the Internet, so if we make more shows and articles about climate change, it may permeate into their brains. But we have to make it relate to them or else they will feel less inclined to change their lives to help the planet.
Second is through their jobs. Most adults are employed or at least know someone who is, so if we educate them through their workplace, it may help.
Or maybe we could make adult classes for global health. Or have their children educate them. In the end there are many choices and I would love to hear other people's way education could help!

I agree. If people are  not educated about the impact their actions have on the environment, nothing will change. I knew a little, but since doing this challenge, I have become more aware of the reality of it. another way we could reach the general public is at P.T.A meetings or some schools call it H.S.A. The principal or the president of the P.T.A could invite a representative from the Department of Environment to talk about sustainability and how we impact the environment. Brochures could also be provided to the students because we know not all parents attend these meetings.

I absolutely agree. I think another way we could educate people about climate change is public speaking. I participated in Speech Club for all of my middle school years, and I learned a lot about the effects of public speaking. Either live presentations or televised speeches could have a big effect on the population.

I agree, too. I've seen both places where they teach and don't teach about taking care of the environment, RRR, not wasting food, etc. and there's a big difference in what ends up in the trashcan. Just having recycling bins and signs around makes people more likely to take initiative.

Hi there! I believe that educating groups of people that have not heard about climate change and such is a great idea! However, we should not just target the older generations. Like many other things, littering, polluting, and anything else that destroys our environment is taught. Children see adults throwing their trash on the ground or leaving the TV/lights on, so they do it too. And I speak from personal experience. In the environment I grew up in, it was ok to just throw your trash on the ground, leave lights on, or leave chargers plugged in. It was not until I took a research trip to the Galapagos Islands when I realized just how harmful my actions were to the environment. We need to be educating everyone--young and old--because everyone learns their actions from someone, and stopping the older generations from teaching their polluting ways will not stop the younger generation that has already learned their ways.

I actually think that the younger generation is an indirect target when you target the older groups for the same reasons you said. They will change their ways and teach their children correctly, who will teach their children and so on. But overall, yes, every age group should definitely be taught.

I really like your idea about educating the elder generation in ways that are able to capture their interest and make them inclined to take action; I think the same can be said for younger generation too. Also, while the online platform is a great way to promote awareness, I think it is also beneficial for neighborhoods, organizations, schools, and such to organize engaging events that advertise climate change and its harmful effects on our environment. By providing a more hands-on experience, people will more likely be able to remember what they learn and apply it to their daily lives.

I think if their younger children aged 6-10 the parents are less inclined to listen to them. If their older children really enforce it in their homes it is more likely to make a difference. Although younger children talk about their day more often than teenagers, parents are more likely to listen to what their children are really passionate about.

I think that educating all ages is a great idea. All people need to know  the affects that our carbon footprints have on our earth. We need to make a change or else our younger generations will have bigger issues to deal with when we could turn things around right now.

I also agree that education is a great first step when it comes to spreading awareness and working towards reducing our carbon footprint. Understanding and being educated about a certain cause definitely brings appreciation for the environment to the table. Learning about the dangers and the damage caused by carbon emissions, especially at a young age, can impact that one person's carbon footprint greatly.

Education is the key to solving the environmental crisis an ur ideas are pretty good on how to do that. However i find it very difficult to educate an older crowd, especially being a younger person, and have them take me serious. However, I think that if we were to have seminars at peoples workplaces on the little changes they can make in their lives such as recycling/compost or turning off their light when they leave the house etc. that would be extremely effective. My father has recently been subject to lifestyle changes when his workplace had a brief meeting on the effects of plastics and thats why i know this would work.

According to a study done by the EPA the rate of recycling per person per day is approximately 1.1 pound and the rate of compost is 0.4 pounds which is an increase from the previous 4 years. This is due to the higher awareness of people. I think education is the key to solving this major crisis
