The Importance of Sorting Our Waste

LillianFUSABOD4MCW

Many people don't know the importance of sorting recycling, compost, and landfill. By recycling we are reusing the materials from previous products and creating something new out of it. By doing this we are reducing waste and making so that we don't need to mine as much for the material. Composting is very important because we reduce the amount of methane. In a landfill, as the trash is breaking down, it produces methane due to the lack of oxygen. Whereas in compost it produces mainly CO2, which is still a greenhouse gas but it much better than methane. Composting also makes  nutrient rich soil from the broken down plant matter, which helps crops grow. The trash in a landfill sits for sometimes hundreds of years producing lots of methane, a very harmful greenhouse gas. Lots of the stuff that ends up in the landfill could have composted or recycled and would have prevented the production of methane. There is such a big difference made between composting and recycling instead of it all going to the landfill. There are still schools and homes that only have one waste bin. I  think it should be taught in schools how to sort trash and they should have the 3 different bins all around campus. I hope we all keep in mind the affect of our actions when deciding where to throw away our trash.
