Trash In The Ocean

elliottbecker

All around the world, trash is littered on the ground and in the water. Many people just think about the affect on the land when it really also affects the water. Today, there are 5,250,000,000,000 pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Although we have known about the amount of trash in the ocean, only now are we seeing the consequences. Not only does it affect the marine life but it is also putting chemicals into the ocean that are killing things like birds.

I agree that this is a serious problem, Elliott.  What ideas do you have where we as individuals and communities could work to try to solve the problem?

I agree with you, marine animals have been greatly suffering so many years from the pollution in the ocean. According to http://oceancrusaders.org/plastic-crusa … tatistics/ 100,00 marine animals die per year, along with 1 million sea birds due to pollution. It is really devasting to know all the living things that I die because we are careless of our trash and cleaning up after ourselves. It is always good to be aware to pick up after ourselves because you never know where the trash can end up and if you see trash you should throw it away even if it's not yours.

I completely agree with this.  We as people spend waste way too many materials and resources on things that will eventually just end up back in the ocean.  One way we could stop our materials from going into the ocean is by using less of the harmful materials.  According to euronews.com, most littered objects are food wrappers and containers.  Maybe a good way to save our ocean is to waste less of these kinds of objects.

I completely agree with what you are saying. I feel like the topic of trash in the ocean is a topic that isn't discussed nearly enough especially with the severity and risk of it. I think people are a little intimidated and don't know what to do with all of the trash in the ocean, but I think we have to start taking more steps to start making dents in that huge number. As well as this, I think the public needs to be educated more about the effects of incorrectly disposing of their trash, such as just tossing it on the ground or in a body of water connected to the ocean.

I think a start would be to find some decomposable materials to make some of our most prominent packagings out of, like for instance an aluminum can or plastic substitute, and that could help prevent further pollution

I completely agree that this. Plastic accumulating in our oceans and on our beaches has become a global crisis. Billions of pounds of plastic is floating on the surface and is being swept away by the current, creating a large mass, twice the size of Texas. Thousands of marine animals, die grisly deaths from eating and getting caught in the plastic. We can help reduce the amount of plastic is by using reusable water bottles and grocery bags.
