In addition to the famous impacts of atmospheric carbon on global warming, there is an equally worrisome effect of carbon dioxide on the oceans: ocean acidification (or OA for short). Here at I2SEA we have a series of resources about OA, including Our Acidifying Ocean, which is an introductory activity and virtual lab (note: now mobile compatible!).
A student suggested that we start a conversation topic about OA, and here it is! Have you heard about Ocean Acidification? If so, are you worried about it? How do you think we can best raise awareness about it among your fellow students and the general public? Have you seen particularly good links or films about OA that you would like to share? Are We Going Under?
Let's talk straight facts. According to the website Global Climate Change, the ocean surface acidity has increased by 30% . I say with more emission of carbon dioxide by people, the ocean just absorbs it more along with increasing how much it takes in. This is very alarming, considering our food and some of the ingredients put into our food come from the deep waters. For awareness about ocean acidification to sky rocket among school students and their families, I think people should try to reach out to companies that help the economy and global issues. Along with saving marine life or getting rid of some things in the ocean that help it consume the carbon dioxide. Please let me know what you think!
Hi Naomi. I completely agree with your argument that states more carbon dioxide being released causes the ocean to become more acidic. The PMEL carbon program has an article that talks about the effects of ocean acidification. One of the main effects is the calcium carbonate saturation levels in the ocean are dropping. This will have a major effect on calcifying creatures. I also agree that trying to notify major companies about this issue could work. I also believe if we reduce our carbon dioxide emissions as a community it would make a difference as well. My question to you is... Do you believe that planting carbon dioxide dependent plants in the ocean may be a step towards fixing this problem?

Hello Naomi. I absolutely agree with your argument and say that with our carbon dioxide pollution the effect of ocean acidification is unimaginable. The effects of carbon dioxide on the ocean would affect all animals in the water like crustaceans, fishes, etc. If we continue to give out more carbon dioxide the ocean could have 150 percent higher in acidity levels. If we reduce our carbon dioxide then it will make a difference in the ocean and life on Earth.
