In addition to the famous impacts of atmospheric carbon on global warming, there is an equally worrisome effect of carbon dioxide on the oceans: ocean acidification (or OA for short). Here at I2SEA we have a series of resources about OA, including Our Acidifying Ocean, which is an introductory activity and virtual lab (note: now mobile compatible!).
A student suggested that we start a conversation topic about OA, and here it is! Have you heard about Ocean Acidification? If so, are you worried about it? How do you think we can best raise awareness about it among your fellow students and the general public? Have you seen particularly good links or films about OA that you would like to share? Awareness For Our Oceans
Ocean acidification is a topic that is rarely brought up outside of websites and events dedicated to it, but it is a very important subject! It is destroying our coral reefs, as well as many other marine organisms with a calcium carbonate skeleton, which can take a huge impact on the food chains involving them, as well as businesses based on them. This is already affecting multiple oyster industries. To raise more awareness of it, we should invest into more advertisements on ocean acidification, and broadcast it on Youtube and other social media platforms. Many young adults, teenagers, and children watch videos on Youtube and spend their time on the internet, and this can educate them on the topic.
I absolutely agree. Ocean acidification should be a topic that is commonly talked about in our communities today. Many people don't even know the harm that this is causing. It is not only destroying marine organisms and coral reefs but it is also affecting our human societies. The coral reefs prevent loss of life, property damage, and erosion, but since these reefs are being destroyed it reduces our protection in the ocean. Ocean acidification can also cause loss of employment. Marine parks gain tourists by the use of the marine ecosystem. These marine ecosystems help many people stay employed, but unfortunately because of the ocean acidification it kills marine organisms. Which will cause Marine parks to go out of business and jobs to be lost. These loss of jobs can affect many people and their families. Ocean acidification should be something that people talk about more so that we can find ways to prevent it.

Awareness for ocean should be a topic incorporated into our daily lives. So much is going on surrounding our oceans, yet ocean acidification is so important, but easily forgotten about. To save our oceans and the vital factors of their ecosystems, we need to focus on all aspects of ocean deterioration.
I agree and this is a big issue. I believe that ocean acidification is a big problem that comes along with increased carbon emissions and it essential to spread the word about this problem.
