Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Have you seen good ideas in cities that you have visited that you could include?

There are lots of Green Walls in Mexico City, and even a large green sculpture.

Hello Ms. Milller! Thanks for the thought-provoking questions! The Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, CA is the epitome of a sustainable building. It uses recycled materials from torn down buildings and fabric from old clothes fro building materials and insulation. Its living rook soaks up a lot of rain water and promotes the growth of endemic plants from California. Its strategically placed windows and roof allow for natural light to warm the museum and for air to naturally cool the building. Solar panels covered with photovoltaic cells on the roof provide the majority of the energy used at the Academy. It really is worth checking out or visiting! Here is a page on the LEED-accredited design of the building: http://www.calacademy.org/academy/build … design.php. Additionally, I have also seen in Seattle, Washington, many sustainable design features, such as increased solar panel energy, promotion of biking/walking/public transportation, and many co mpost/recycling bins. Which are some cities you have visited that have excellent examples of sustainable design? I am interested in knowing.

Sebastian, I love the building you are referring to. It is a great example of ways we can recycle, reuse, and repurpose as well as save on energy use.

Yes, it really is! Have you visited? What are some examples of sustainable buildings in your city?

"Vertical Farming" is an idea that deeply appeals to me, and not just on the personal level of farming done in sky-scrapers. If this idea works, then less shipping will have to be done since at least some food could be grown locally; this also would free-up land that could be converted into preserves.

That sounds amazing blefan! I can only imagine seeing literally green skyscrapers in major metropolises  around the world! They would indeed provide so many resources!
