Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Reducing Carbon Emissions through Carpooling

gmeyne1

According to an article from the UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists), over one third of the carbon emissions in the United States come from on-road vehicles, making it the largest source of air pollution in our country. (http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_vehicles/wh … EBr6Y3u3IU) In large cities like the one I live in, people drive to and from work everyday alone coming from all over the city. At night, the stars are rarely visible because of the amount of pollution. Cars are incredibly convenient, but there are so many negative effects that result from their frequent use. In my opinion, carpooling is the best option to reduce carbon emissions significantly. Each weekday morning, I carpool with two other girls to cross country practice. However, the afternoons are the time where we reduce the carbon emissions the most effectively. I carpool with three other girls on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and on Monday and Friday, I carpool with those same three AND three boys. It might be a tight squeeze, but fitti ng eight people in one car, or as many as possible, is one of the best ways to reduce our carbon footprint and help the environment.
