Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

I carpool almost all of the time

I would design a city that would make transportation easier. I carpool on my way to and from school, and on my way to and from soccer practice. By carpooling with others, your carbon footprint is not as high and there are less vehicles on the roads. In addition to carpooling reducing the amount of traffic, it saves you gas money. We can reduce carbon emissions by having people headed to the same location ride together. Instead of having five cars produce carbon, we can have only one. This might not seem like much, but if more and more people start doing this then our carbon emissions will decrease by a lot. More people can also ride buses or trains more often. Transportation contributes a lot to our carbon footprints, and more people need to be aware of our effect on the earth.

I agree! Carpool is a really cool thing because, like you said, it not only lessens traffic, but also can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from multiple cars. The transportation section of my carbon footprint was HUGE, and can probably be slightly reduced by carpooling to more places. I also carpool with people to and from school, but when my friends and I are meeting up, we each take our own cars and probably produce way more CO2 than is necessary. I completely agree that if more and more people began to carpool, we would really make a difference in the world's total carbon footprint.

I do the same thing! Lessening the CO2 emissions is great but I would love if the United States tried their best to help fund transportation to third world countries. Seeing that we are so over privileged with transportation and in a way worsen/add unknowingly to the CO2 emissions. Meanwhile in Africa, kids are being forced to walk up to 6 miles for an education.

People have yet to realize that we as a country are privileged enough to have the things we have yet we waste and or add to pollution. When we could be donating or even shedding the spotlight on the struggles of poverty. Human beings need to help our kind. In a way we all in the United States, are the villains in the poor vs rich display....

I carpool as well. Unfortunately, many times people do not get in touch with others living in the same area as them. I would suggest creating a bulletin board with a map in work places and schools, to show people living in the same location, as well as a list of names and phone numbers from people willing to carpool. I believe this would encourage carpooling by lessening some of the effort required to find a group to carpool with. So often, it is just more convenient not to figure out the details. By making it easy to get in touch with people in their area, carpool will be a better, and more convenient choice.
