Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Renewable Resource: Wind Energy

natfest

As the earth continues to warm because of increasing carbon emissions (due to the burning of fossil fuels), we must look to other ways of creating energy that will not pollute the planet as much. Renewable resources come from natural resources, and can therefore be replenished. They also positively affect the environment by improving the air and water quality, curbing global warming, protecting habitats, etc. They can also create many jobs for people!
One renewable resource that is useful and affordable is wind energy. According to http://www.nrdc.org/energy/renewables/wind.asp , wind energy is harnessed by wind turbine blades. The energy is eventually transferred to a generator which converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. It also states that the wind industry is increasing. In 2011, 3,464 turbines were made in the U.S., and today, wind in America could generate enough electricity to power at least 11 million homes. Wind turbines also create steady income for investors and landowners, and provide manufacturing, construction and operation jobs for at l east 75,000 Americans.
Wind turbines have so many positive effects on our environment. They're affordable, they reduce the use of fossil fuels, they create jobs, and they create energy in a renewable and clean way.

This is a very interesting article, however I would have liked to see more details concerning the disadvantages of wind energy. Is it suitable for most regions? How efficient is it compared to other renewable resources? It has come to my understanding that the main disadvantage of wind power is our ability to predict the wind current. There are areas around the world where a large amount of wind is needed to determine that the results of wind energy usage is positive. Not only is the location crucial in the performance of the turbines, public appeal is also important to. Wind turbines are known for not catching the attention of a consumers eyes, which could lead to the amount of turbines sold.
