Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Solar Power

LaurenL

Contrary to popular belief, solar powers are not the ideal source of power. It has many disadvantages. It is expensive, inefficient, unreliable, and can easily be destroyed. Not to mention the location plays an important role. If the location is frequently sunny, and rarely cloudy, then that location would be ideal than a location where it rains more than the sun come out.

yes, Solar power is very expensive and inefficient (on a small scale), but it is not unreliable or delicate. One of the reasons solar panels are so expensive is because they are fairly new technology, but so were computers when they first came out and in a couple years they will be a lot cheaper. During testing at Arizona state university, where they have the largest solar panel testing facility, the discovered that solar panels can be hit by hailstone 2 inches in diameter and at 50 mile an hour without breaking, proving they aren't easily destroyed.

Solar power can be inefficient, but only in a small scale. There are many ways to approach this problem, solar panels could be stretched across the Mojave or Sahara desert for miles, or even in the arctic where it is hardly ever dark. streets could be replace with stronger solar panels and there are even some theorys on solar paint. solar energy is no longer in the distant future.

Not every source of energy is crafted to perfection. This means that solar power can be modified, but it will take time. The article states whether or not solar power is reliable. It talks about how solar power is practically useless during the nighttime. It also points out that purchasing solar batteries will allow you to harness excess power which can then be used throughout nighttime. This just goes to show that solar power may have some major setbacks but it doesn't check out to be an unreliable source of energy. Solar power energy reduces the amount of fossil fuels consumed which minimizes the rate of pollution. At the time, this may seem to only affect areas that actually are able to acquire solar power but if you look at that as the whole, there is a large amount of energy being saved which is a start and can lead to an even bigger amount once solar energy is successfully modified.
