Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Reusable Diapers

My sustainable city would only sell/use reusable diapers. Although you may not think about the affect diapers have, it is a big one. Around 20 billion diapers are disposed into landfills every year, making 3.5 tons of waste alone. In addition, the production of diapers causes more then 200,000 trees to be cut down, and 3.4 billion gallons of fuel oil to be used to make diapers. Cloth diapers may cost more, and waste water, but are overall a gentler impact on the world http://www.livestrong.com/article/14989 … e-diapers/

I agree that the impact IS very large. People should buy the cloth diapers, regardless of the price. If you think about it, it will probably save you money in the long run. A group of my friends and I are actually working on a community projects and landfills are involved. Due to this, we know that a lot of diapers (and paper) are thrown into them.

I agree with your statements about the diapers. I think it would be a good way to reduce waste and pollution, and yes they may cost more but i think it would have a better impact on the environment!

This sounds like a entertaining subject. I never thought diapers made that big of an impact in landfills. 3.5 tons is a lot. Its pretty neat that diapers play a huge role in our landfills

I agree but I also disagree. Yes I think that people throw out hundreds of diapers a day and it does take up like a lot waste. But I also disagree because reusable diapers just seem unsanitary to me. I mean just think about it reusing diapers that you have used the bathroom in. Im not very sure how it all works but I know that some have like reusable pads or something that just go inside a diaper. But aren't you just throwing away the pads like you are the diapers? And what if it leaks through the pad you are throwing diapers and pads away. Although some people might think t is a good idea but i just think it unsanitary and wasteful.

I do think that using reusable diapers would have a large impact on the environment in a positive matter by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and not only that, but it will also help peoples wallets in the long run!

Reusable diapers are actually a really good idea. Many people don't realize what a negative effect diapers have on our environment. Not only do we fill landfills, but the chemicals used pollute the earth, and the gases we have to burn to produce them are harmful to the earth as well. I really think that this could be a small step to a cleaner environment!

The idea for reusable diapers is fantastic. I babysit a lot so I see how many diapers a person can throw away a day. Diapers have a huge negative affect on our environment and cost a lot. This ideas will save money and the environment!

This is perhaps one of the most creative ideas I have seen on this wall. No one ever really thinks about how many diapers are used a day, let alone a year in this nation. The one and done nature of diapers can be easily dealt with and would be a great idea to recycle them.

A very intelligent idea, wish It would come up to life someday in near future, lots and lots of waste is made everyday, and recylcling diapers would reduce our CO2 emmisions even more.

I like that you chose a problem that not many people even talk about. It is also strange to me to see that diapers are causing so many problems! Your idea of using reusable diapers is brilliant.
