Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

The average household leak can be accounted for the 10,000 gallons of water wasted a year. Nationally that is more than 1 trillion gallons of water. Just by fixing water leaks, homeowners can save about 10% of their water bills. So why don't we? The reason is that most homeowners do not realize that there are leaks. One good method of detecting a leaks is checking your water meter before and after a two hour period when no water is being used. If afterwards it is not exactly the same you probably have a leak. Leaky faucets can be fixed by checking faucet washers and gaskets for wear and replacing them if necessary. Most leaky showerheads can be fixed by ensuring a tight connection using pipe tape and a wrench. If your toilet is leaking, the cause is often an old, faulty toilet flapper. Over time, this inexpensive rubber part decays, or minerals build up on it. It's usually best to replace the whole rubber flapper—a relatively easy, inexpensive do-it-yourself proje ct that pays for itself in no time. for more information on detecting a fixing leaks go to http://www3.epa.gov/watersense/pubs/fixleak.html
