Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

My Sustainable City

I feel that there are 3 things that could make every city a little more sustainable. Firstly, bike paths and rentals. Although my area has many bike paths, it has no bike rentals. I have also been to areas where there are no bike paths or sidewalks, making it hard to use this method of transportation. With all the carbon that is emitted because of cars being used to drive to places where you could easily walk, bike paths would be a very effective and eco-friendly idea. Secondly, public tvs. In a park near me, they set up screens for residents to watch movies, which brings a lot more people together for one showing instead of each individual watching them on their own. If we had stations like these everywhere, think how much electricity would be saved. Residents could gather to watch movies, tv shows, or even sporting events and the screens could be turned off when not in use. Additionally, restaurants,  and other public places would no longer need to have tv's in their buildings. Lastly, stores that sell organic food. Organic foods are locally grown, so there is no need  to transport them. They are also free of hormones or harmful materials, use less chemicals, and the farms they come from are more diverse. (http://www.care2.com/greenliving/why-bu … -meat.html) As of now organic foods can be expensive, but if more cities adopted these markets, and made them more accesible to the general public, in theory these prices would go down. The above actions are three ways I believe we can support a sustainable city!
