Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Electrical Cars

rachelboeker

Electrical cars are great for the environment. Even though electrical cars still give of smog it is a significantly less amount amount compared to gasoline powered cars. According to phys.org electric vehicles have a much smaller carbon footprint than gas-powered vehicles because they are much more efficient. However, it will take a decade or more until enough electric vehicles are on the road to make a significant impact.(http://phys.org/news/2011-04-electric-c … rence.html) Even though these facts are true these cars still make an impact no matter how many there are out there. Each and every little thing that we do affects the environment so why don't we reduce the affect by using electrical cars.

Electrical cars are great because they don't use flammable fuels or liquids, which makes them safer. Also, they certainly don't produce greenhouse gasses and, as they get cheaper, more and more people everywhere will be able to drive them. This will positively impact pollution and climate change.

I wonder how people will react to most/all cars being converted or  traded for electrical or even hydro powered cars. It will obviously be good for the environment but we also have to think about where the electricity comes from places like coal plants and how that affects the environment. So I believe we need clean sustainable energy before we can have electric cars.

That is a really good point Chris.  However, research shows that even with the most polluting forms of electricity (ie coal) it is STILL less pollution overall to use electric cars that gas

There are very affordable electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and the Prius, but I think that more affordable electric cars should be available, alot of electric cars are very expensive, like the Tesla Model S. If there were more affordable electric cars, maybe more people would buys them.

I like what you said Jared because you hit a really key point of buying an electric car. More people would buy the cars if the prices went down but electric cars take a lot of money to make. But I still agree because not everybody will buy electric cars but if the prices went down, then more people would start to consider it.

When you buy an electric car you can receive tax breaks and you obviously don't have to pay for gas, but I agree that there should be a higher incentive to buy an electric car.

haydenevans13

I think people who buy large gas-consuming trucks should receive tax breaks because trucks are the back bone of the American economy. Although electric cars may seem cool right now, think about it this way: you have to stop and recharge your car for at least three hours every 200 miles. Not ideal for a road trip.

jackffron2001

But Hayden I think this early in the process experimenting with electric cars, the car companies mostly imply that they would be used mostly around the city.

Yeah, a follow up on the previous comment, electric cars are durable to an extent, in terms of energy. They are probably directed to a more centralized area and not further away places. If electric cars became much more common soon, then the city will implement more charging stations to benefit the drivers and not have to be stranded. Electric cars should be more common, but they should be smart in the execution so it won't fail.

There is actually a technique called inductive charging, which uses electromagnetic fields to transfer energy between two objects to do something like charge a battery. This is actually used in the new samsung phone and could be put in roadways to charge cars as they drive and when they are parked.

Another reason everyone right now isn't driving an electric car is because of the price of buying the car/ switching from what you have right now if it works.
