Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Important Components

My Sustainable City will have three major components. First, electric cars will be the major type of vehicle on the road. According to  http://www.environmentamerica.org/news/ … -pollution , the U.S. could cut out 18 million tons of carbon by 2025 just because of electric cars. Electric cars are better for the environment because they have cleaner engines and will help release us from our binding contract with oil. Electric cars will be reasonably affordable, so that it will be a normal thing to have an electric car, not a luxury. Recycling would also be a major component. People do not realize how important it is to recycle and I will make sure that my citizens know that recycling is very important to our city. Citizens will teach their kids at a very early age how to recycle, so as they get older recycling is just the normal thing to do. There will be recycling bins everywhere and the trucks that pick them up will be electric trucks. There will be awards for the city depending on how much we recycled, to boost the fun in recy cling and feeling of accomplishment. And finally, I will make sure that there is greenery everywhere. My city will stress the importance of taking care of our environment, by having parks in many different parts of the city and suggesting that all citizens should at least have a garden, no matter the size. We will have tree or plant planting parties and let the citizens be able to own a tree in the nearest park to them. This tree will be their responsibility and will help teach responsibility, but also show how easy it is to care for the nature around you. My Sustainable City will run on the idea that it is our responsibility to care for the earth that gives us so much.

Hey Lauryn, I have heard that electric cars can be worse for the environment per mile than the average gasoline powered car (depending on where you live). I know this shocked me too. When I saw where you live, I mean that it basically comes down to whether you live on the West (anything left of Colorado) or the East (anything to the right of Colorado). This is because most of the electricity on the East comes from coal, so if you live in an Eastern state, then getting an electric car is not actually doing the environment many favors. However, if you live in a Western state, where electricity is generally from cleaner sources, then electric cars are great. You can read more about it in this Mother Jones's article: http://www.motherjones.com/environment/ … gas-cars-0

I think that is a great idea. I also think that bicycles should be used as transportation as well. Also adding roundabouts instead of  having traffic lights would cut down on the use of electricity. Roundabouts are also cheaper than traffic lights and in the middle of the roundabout you can put trees, flowers, etc. I definitely think that recycling needs to be more stressed and that teaching and encouraging it from a young age is a wonderful idea.
