Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Sustainability-Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level (dictionary.com)
To build a sustainable city there is multiple things that need to be taken into consideration. What are the resources that need to be sustained? How will you keep these resources sustained? When looking at a city there are many different resources used all the time, however I am going to stick to the big ones so you get an idea of what needs to happen. Power, electricity, Solar panels are a great way to produce power for cities, windmills are another alternative, but doing both is really good. Water, I live in California and right now we are currently experiencing a drought, we have used up a very large portion of our water sources because we have not been sustainable. The way to stay sustainable with a water supply is to use either less or the same amount of water as you are receiving. If you do this you will not run out of water.

Windmills are definitely a good alternative due to their reliance on the wind and needing nothing in order to run them. However, a lot of solar panels create high levels of pollution when being made and while efficient once they are built, they also require high maintenance and cost a lot. For water, we could transition to more efficient crops as some crops, such as almonds, take up a lot of water for little gain. They may be delicious, but they are not necessary for everyday life and people would be fine without them.
