Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Home Grown Food in the City

One way that would definitely make a difference in city life would be growing food in planter boxes on the tops of apartments or on a porch. There has been advancements in this area to try to achieve this goal of a more sustainable city and scientist have developed a area that is self sufficient, all you would have to do is water it. People could plant fruits and vegetables instead of buying mass quantities of produce. This would also help people cut down on gas because they wouldn't have to go to the store to get all their produce.

Adding on to that a study from International Floriculture, Observed the effects of plants in urban areas. Larger trees have a big effect on the city's carbon foot print. Trees are able to absorb big amounts of carbon dioxide. Although this may not stop emissions of carbon dioxide in the area, it definitely lessens the effect.

This is a great idea Grant, but this would cause people to use their extra time to care for the plants on their roofs. Also, how would people decide on who gets what because there are more people than just one in an apartment building.

This is a great idea Grunt. My family uses planter boxes in our backyard. It is a great way to have access to fresh food with out wasting so much gas or resources. The one problem that we run into is having to resupply on seeds and soil at home stores, but in the long run you save more gas and reduce your carbon foot print with home gardening.
