Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Power Generation

I feel like one of the most important factors of a city's carbon output is how it gets its energy. Obviously, sources such as coal and oil powered plants produce the most pollution but are effective and widely used. Alternatives usually have one or more factors preventing them from being widely used. Nuclear power, for instance, is a form of energy that gives off almost no pollution and is incredibly efficient. However, there is no good way to store nuclear waste, and they are expensive to set up. Solar power is incredibly clean, but requires huge arrays to be even remotely effective on a large scale. Finding a source of power that balances pollution while not compromising efficiency is one of the most important factors in keeping a city as free of pollution as possible.

I completely agree with you. I didn't realize that using the electricity that we use to HELP the earth and our community could be hurting it. This is a very good point. We need to find a better electricity solution, because we desperately need it. Today. I noticed that there were automatic hand dryers in a public bathroom instead of paper towels, which I realized is a huge improvement in our society because it provides less waste and garbage that could end up in the ocean. However, if the electricity that we use to make these hand dryers possible is hurting us rather than healing... this could be a serious problem. This is a great point that you brought up.
