Sustainable City

Here's your chance not just to be the mayor, but the original city planner as well! Imagine a medium sized city that would be developed with modern, low carbon transportation in mind, and other strategies to reduce the average citizens' carbon footprints.

What would that city look like? Would that make you more likely to want to live there?

Waste Management in San Francisco

San Francisco is a great role model for city-planners looking for sustainable, eco-friendly designs. Only 20% of San Francisco's waste goes into the landfill thanks to the city's three-bin policy, which introduced compost bins for food scraps and soiled paper. I think compost bins should be made a priority nation wide, as not only do they have an enormous impact on the amount of trash a city produces, implementing compost bins would probably require changes that would create jobs.

I completely agree with this statement. I feel strongly that the "three-bin" idea should be mandatory rather than a choice. My neighbor just upgraded to a larger size garbage receptacle. I feel that this should not be allowed as there should not be a need for a bigger trash bin if you are properly composting and recycling. Having this not be an option would force people to be more conscious in terms of sorting and reducing their trash consumption.
